BRIEF CHARACTER HISTORY: Note: The character known colloquially as "the Warden" in this case is a Human Noble Rogue who is slippery in tongue and skill but (for the most part) is a good natured person. In D&D terms, she would be considered Chaotic Good. She fights dirty and does some acts out of selfish desire but usually ends up helping others in the process and even occasionally without much personal gain. (Although she has the unfortunate habit of trying to help some demons, too, of all things as if she pities them or something. Strange.) This forces Alistair to be wary and speak out about some decisions made but overall he tends to enjoy her company with a fair likelihood to lead to romantic intentions.
Alistair was born from a tryst between King Maric and a serving maid who died giving birth to her illegitimate son. Because of this he was taken in by Arl Eamon Guerrin and raised in Redcliffe for his younger years. However, the arl's wife had unfounded suspicions about the boy and insisted he be shipped off to the Chantry. So he was. Alistair spent the rest of his young, restless life being raised by the Chantry and being trained to be a Templar. Then the Grey Warden Duncan came along and took an interest in Alistair. At this time Alistiar had not yet taken his vows as a Templar and thus, by invoking the Right of Conscription which is well within the rights of a Grey Warden, Duncan rescued (as Alistair himself puts it) Alistair from becoming a full-fledged Templar and a life of servitude to the Chantry. Alistair then underwent the Grey Warden's special initiation rite, the Joining, and became a Grey Warden. He spent some time with the other Grey Wardens before the Battle of Ostagar quickly came to a head.
Alistair accompanied the new Grey Warden recruits brought to Ostagar by Duncan on their first test out in the Korcari Wilds. And he was there when they underwent the Joining. Out of the three recruits only one--noblewoman of the Cousland family--survive. It is with this new recruit that Alistair undergoes the assignment to light the signal flame in the Battle of Ostagar. Not a very glorious task but important nonetheless. Unfortunately, the Darkspawn arrive first and the two young Grey Wardens are forced to battle their way up to the top of the tower. Only to then witness the betrayal of Loghain Mac Tir as the forces under his command march away from the battle instead of attacking at the signal. Alistair and Cousland are overwhelmed by the Darkspawn forces and only saved by the intervention of an old apostate witch named Flemeth.
Cousland and Alistair met the old witch earlier on their quest through the Korcari Wilds, retrieving a set of ancient scrolls that the Grey Wardens had left behind in haste and that Flemeth took after their leave for safekeeping. Cousland and Alistair would now use these documents to remind the people of Ferelden of old promises to aid the Grey Wardens in their time of need during a Blight and gather a (hopefully) formidable army to fight the Darkspawn. In compensation of saving their lives, Flemeth gave the two Grey Wardens a new companion: Flemeth's daughter, Morrigan. The three companions (and Cousland's faithful dog) traveled from the Wilds to a small town called Lothering. There they met Leliana and Sten, both of whom joined the Grey Wardens to aid them in their cause for one reason or another. Departing from there, on Alistair's suggestion the companions headed to Redcliffe to seek the aid of Arl Eamon. It is along the way that Alistair reluctantly admits to fellow Grey Warden Cousland that he is the illegitimate son of King Maric (and therefore technically a possible heir to the throne) and that he grew up in castle Redcliffe, more or less. The conversation did not go over nearly as badly as he had anticipated and Alistair begins to take heart in his fellow Grey Warden companion despite her more "slippery" shall we say nature.
Unfortunately, circumstances at Redcliffe are less than favorable for the group's arrival to seek aid. After helping the village below the castle defend themselves from undead attacking throughout the night, the Grey Wardens and their companions sneak into the castle through a secret passage. In the dungeon they learn a bit about the plight in the castle from a mage locked up in one of the cells. Despite Alistair's protests, Cousland frees the mage upon the condition that he help if at all possible. Surprisingly enough, the mage does offer to help later when the group confronts the possessed son of Arl Eamon and it proves impossible for them to end the current circumstances without killing the boy. More bad news: the only way the mage can help is through blood magic and by making a sacrifice in order to send another mage into the Fade to fight the demon in its own realm. Despite both Alistair and Morrigan's protests, Cousland deems it the only way possible to save the boy and, since the mother is willing to sacrifice her life for her son's, agrees to have the mage perform the magic. Morrigan slips into the Fade and defeats the demon and the boy is freed from its possession--at a heavy price. But Arl Eamon is still unconscious from being poisoned and seems likely to never awaken on his own.
